How much hair loss is normal?

This is how you distinguish normal hair loss from excessive hair loss.

Products for hair loss

Everyone loses up to 100 hairs a day – within a certain range, this is a normal, natural process. Hair loss becomes concerning when it exceeds the normal amount and leaves visible traces. What options do those affected have to stop hair loss?

Causes of hair loss

Why do hair fall out at all?

Schematic illustration of the hair growth cycle with growth phase, transition phase, and resting phase.

Every hair goes through a growth cycle. This is divided into three phases:

  • In the active growth phase (Anagen), the hair is produced. This process can last between two and six years.
  • The transition phase (Catagen) lasts a few weeks. During this time, the follicle detaches and falls out.
  • Now the follicle regenerates in the resting phase (Telogen). This phase can last between two and six months. During this phase, the metabolic activity of the hair follicle decreases, so the hair falls out at the end of the resting phase before the follicle regenerates and the growth of a new hair begins.

This cycle ensures the quality of the hair over a long period.

You lose about 100 hairs a day!

Approximately 100 hairs reach the end of their lifespan daily – this is a natural hair loss that occurs in everyone.

Each hair follicle can go through this cycle between 10 and 30 times. It is individually genetically determined for each person how often each hair root goes through this cycle until, ultimately, no new hair can be formed. This is also the reason why the number of hairs can naturally decrease with age.

Hair Loss Symptom Check

Is my hair loss completely normal? Take the symptom check

If you lose more than 100 hairs a day or significantly more hair than usual, the cause of hair loss should be determined.
You can recognise severe hair loss by the following signs:

More hair than usual on your pillow, hairbrush, or in the shower drain

Loss of volume, your hair seems to be getting finer overall

Receding hairline

Widening parting

Bald spot on the back of the head

Scalp becomes visible in certain areas

Do one or more of these symptoms apply to you?

Then you might be experiencing increased hair loss. It’s important to determine what type it is. In about 80 percent of cases, hair loss is hereditary. The growth cycles become shorter, the hair becomes finer, and the maximum number of cycles is reached more quickly – the result: no more hair grows back. This inherited form of hair loss usually appears at the temples and on the back of the head.

Preventing hair loss

Shampoos for hair loss

To successfully prevent hereditary hair loss, it is important to act early. By regularly using caffeine shampoo or liquid, you can extend the growth phases of your hair and make it more resistant to the triggers that can cause hair loss. Daily use of caffeine shampoos or liquids is crucial to ensure that the caffeine reaches the hair roots every day and protects your hair.
