Itching, dryness, or tightness – more than one in four men have a sensitive scalp. This is not only uncomfortable but can also lead to annoying dandruff. Find out here how dry scalp develops and how you can prevent it!

Symptoms of dry scalp

How do I recognise a dry scalp?

Left: Oily dandruff – Right: Dry dandruff

The moisture barrier of the scalp is in a delicate balance. If it is disturbed, it can lead to a dry scalp: the skin feels tight, itches, and becomes inflamed.

Due to moisture loss, in addition to itching, redness, or feelings of tightness, it can also lead to dry dandruff. These are small, white, and fall from the scalp and hair.

Causes of dry scalp

What does dry scalp mean and where does it come from?

Schematic comparison of normal scalp without moisture loss and dry scalp due to a disrupted skin barrier and lack of lipid film

A healthy scalp is surrounded by an intact lipid film. This regulates moisture and protects the scalp. When this lipid film is disrupted, the skin loses moisture and dries out.

One possible cause is the underproduction of the sebaceous glands, which can throw the scalp off its natural balance. A dry, sensitive scalp can no longer fulfil its protective function. The consequences: itching and dandruff.

Possible triggers for a dry scalp

  • Genetic predisposition determines whether one is prone to dry skin.
  • Temperature affects the moisture content of the scalp (for example, very cold or very hot air).
  • Age is a possible factor; for example, older people tend to have drier skin than younger people.
  • Stress
Preventing dry scalp

Reduce triggers and choose the right shampoo

To prevent dry scalp and dry dandruff, it is necessary to reduce the triggers. Additionally, choosing the right shampoo is crucial.

Mild shampoos support the scalp in its regeneration and alleviate the noticeable discomfort.

De-greasing anti-dandruff shampoos are too aggressive for dry scalp and further dry it out.

Don't wash your hair daily, as this can further disrupt the lipid film and ultimately contribute to a dry scalp.
