Causes of an itchy scalp: What causes an itchy scalp?
An itchy scalp can be caused by either too dry or too oily scalp. Common causes include skin conditions, allergies, fungal infections, stress, or the wrong hair care products.
Once you know the cause, you can start the appropriate treatment yourself or with a dermatologist.
Itching caused by a dry scalp: Moisture for relieving itchiness from a dry scalp
A dry scalp is a common cause of itching. When the scalp lacks moisture, it becomes more susceptible to irritation and infections. Cold temperatures, heating, hot water, and unsuitable hair care products worsen the problem.
The goal of treating a dry, itchy scalp is to restore moisture and balance the disrupted skin barrier. The moisturising Alpecin hair care products support the skin's protective barrier and thus reduce itching.
Itchy scalp caused by oily dandruff: Anti-dandruff shampoo for itchy, oily scalp
Excessive sebum production can cause itching, as sebum provides a breeding ground for bacteria that produce irritants and can intensify the itching. This can lead to oily dandruff and visibly greasy hair.
Hair care products can also be to blame for oily dandruff on the scalp. Avoid harsh products if your scalp is sensitive, as they can cause irritation leading to burning and itching.
Alpecin products for oily dandruff can help relieve the itching.
Skin conditions and allergies are also possible reasons for an itchy scalp, so you should definitely see a doctor in all these cases. Often, treating the underlying cause can effectively relieve the scalp itching.
