Hair care with caffeine
Caffeine to prevent hair loss: What ingredients are in the caffeine complex?
The caffeine complex is made up of caffeine, zinc and niacin. Caffeine stimulates the hair roots, prolongs the growth phase and improves hair growth. Niacin and zinc are important growth factors for healthy hair roots.
The caffeine-containing combination of active ingredients neutralises the hereditary and undesired effect of testosterone – the growth phases are extended again to their natural length and hair growth is possible even in older age.
Is Alpecin equally effective on all men?
The efficacy of Alpecin always depends on regular application and the individual constitution of the scalp. Moreover other factors such as physical stress, an unhealthy diet, e.g. too much fast food, environmental toxins, psychosomatics, stress, lack of vitamins, occupational stresses (e.g., wearing of a helmet) can also accelerate hair loss.
Hereditary hair loss in men
50% of men are affected by hair loss. 80% of all cases are due to hereditary hair loss, “androgenetic alopecia”, which is a source of much concern to men. Hereditary hair loss is not a disease but a genetic disposition. As such there is no cure, instead it must be treated permanently. Alpecin prevents hereditary hair loss. The efficacy of Alpecin products has been confirmed in the following studies.
Where can I purchase Alpecin products?
You can purchase Alpecin products at hair salons, pharmacies, drugstores or the drugstore aisles of grocery stores.
Are the caffeine-based products from Alpecin also suitable for women?
Alpecin products were specifically developed for the requirements of male scalps, which is also reflected in the fragrance and the very masculine packaging. However, the caffeine-based active ingredient complex is not gender specific and is thus also effective in women who suffer from hereditary hair loss.
Hair loss in women
When should you start the caffeine therapy?
When does hair loss start and when should you start the Alpecin caffeine therapy?
If you are genetically predisposed to hair loss, you should start the therapy s soon as possible, i.e., after puberty. At this point in time, the male hormone testosterone will develop its negative impact on the hair roots' energy supply and shorten the hairs' growth phases until they fall out prematurely. As such, hereditary hair loss is not a question of age – take preventative action on a daily basis, e.g. with Alpecin Caffeine Shampoo C1. If you wish to know whether you are at risk, determine your personal hair loss risk in just a few minutes with our baldness calculator.
I suffer from hereditary hair loss. Should I use Alpecin Caffeine Liquid or Caffeine Shampoo C1 or both?
For more intensive prevention, it makes sense to use both products. Especially for people who do not wash their hair on a daily basis, the additional use of Alpecin Caffeine Liquid is highly recommended. When applied, it causes a fresh tingling on the scalp; its active ingredients travel along the hair shaft and form a depot sufficient for up to 24 hours.
What happens if I stop the caffeine therapy? Will I lose more hair? How long do I need to continue the therapy?
The regular energy supply from the caffeine complex extends the growth phases of the individual hairs, thereby facilitating hair growth well into old age.
If treatment is interrupted, these hair growth phases will shorten and the hair will fall out prematurely. As a result, successful prevention of hereditary hair loss must be conducted early, regularly and permanently. Daily, long-term application is strongly recommended.
Which shampoo should you use, if you are predisposed for hereditary hair loss but also have a scalp problem (dandruff, oily scalp, sensitive scalp)?
Many people suffer from scalp problems such as dryness, itching and dandruff. Many Alpecin products have been developed to specifically tackle these complaints. In addition, most of our products contain the proven Alpecin caffeine complex that works to prevent hereditary hair loss. The choice of the correct product depends on the concomitant scalp problems.
- For oily dandruff and hair loss: Alpecin Double-Effect Caffeine Shampoo
- For normal to dry scalps: Alpecin Active Shampoo A1
- For oily scalps: Alpecin Active Shampoo A2
- For dandruff (oily dandruff): Alpecin Anti-Dandruff Shampoo A3
- For sensitive scalps and dry dandruff: Alpecin Sensitive Shampoo S1
- For very sensitive scalps and dry dandruff: Alpecin Hypo-Sensitive Shampoo
In addition or as an alternative you can also massage in the Alpecin Caffeine Liquid each morning or every time you wash your hair. The caffeine-containing combination of active ingredients travels along the hair shaft and forms a depot sufficient for up to 24 hours.
Is massaging your scalp with coffee effective against hair loss?
Caffeine from coffee is not able to penetrate the scalp or the hair follicle. This requires a special carrier base (galenics) that transports the active ingredients to the location where they can develop their effect.
Is Alpecin really effective against hair loss?
The galenics of the Alpecin products developed specially by Dr. Wolff Research transport the caffeine into the hair follicles where it has been proven to stimulate the hair roots. Its efficacy has been demonstrated in the following studies.
Does drinking coffee help to prevent hair loss?
Since you ingest coffee orally, it will first pass through the gastrointestinal organs to be absorbed by the organism at a later time. Subsequently, it is distributed throughout the body and only a tiny quantity reaches the scalp and the hair roots directly. As a result, a local and direct supply of caffeine to the hair roots is expedient and necessary. Even the consumption of 50 cups of coffee would not provide the hair roots with enough caffeine.
Caffeine for the hair
Caffeine Shampoo C1
I have sensitive skin. How long should I leave the Caffeine Shampoo on my scalp?
In principle, the Caffeine Shampoo C1 is well tolerated. Nevertheless, the longer you leave the shampoo on the scalp, the more intensive the effect of the caffeine. This, however, may increase the risk of scalp redness especially for sensitive scalps. Therefore, you should pay close attention to how your scalp reacts when you leave the product on longer. Normally, 2 minutes should be enough to stimulate the hair roots.
Can I enhance the effectiveness of Caffeine Shampoo if I leave it in for more than 2 minutes?
The efficacy of a caffeine-containing shampoo to treat hereditary hair loss was demonstrated in scientific studies [in vivo] after being left on for just two minutes – from application to rinsing out. The presence of stimulating caffeine was confirmed after just 120 seconds which means there is no need to leave the product in for longer. A study [Charite] has, however, shown that absorption of the active ingredient increases for a period of up to 30 minutes. After that, penetration via the skin surrounding the follicles increases to such an extent that an additional caffeine supply is ensured for up to about eight hours.
If the product is left on the scalp for longer than 2 minutes, check your scalp type and scalp condition. Depending on the scalp's sensitivity, leaving the product on excessively long can result in temporary redness. To achieve a particularly intensive protective effect, we therefore recommend the combined use of Alpecin Caffeine Shampoo C1 and Alpecin Caffeine Liquid.
I have been using Alpecin Caffeine Liquid for 3 weeks and still haven't noticed any improvement in my hair loss.
The course of the hair cycle is different for every single one of us. Some of your hairs are active in the growth phase (anagen) whilst others are in the resting phase (telogen) at any one time. As a rule, the roots are in a growth phase for around 8 years before switching to a resting phase which lasts from 5 to 8 months. The hair then falls out. A new growth cycle then commences which can be repeated between 8 and 20 times.
Strengthen the hair roots
After using the Caffeine Liquid it can take a certain amount of time for the hair roots to recover and switch from the resting phase to a new growth phase. Normally you should notice a reduction in hair loss after around 3 to 4 months.
I have been using Alpecin Caffeine Liquid for more than a year. No hair has grown back. Is Alpecin Caffeine Liquid ineffective?
The effect of Alpecin Caffeine Liquid is aimed at the viable hair roots. The caffeine complex only strengthens existing yet weakened hairs or hair roots. It is not a hair growth tonic.
Is it possible to overdose in a single day from multiple applications of Alpecin Caffeine Liquid?
No. The amount of caffeine in Alpecin Caffeine Liquid that is absorbed via the scalp and hair sheath equates to precisely the right dose and is absolutely safe even for people who react sensitively to caffeine. In addition, the active ingredient is applied locally to the scalp; the quantities that disseminate throughout the organism from there are negligible.
Can I use other products such as gel or hair spray as well as Alpecin Caffeine Liquid?
Yes. After massaging your scalp with Alpecin Caffeine Liquid, wait about 3 minutes until the product is absorbed; then use a male styling product of your choice, e.g. hair gel, wax or spray.
The recommended usage instructions on the product say "In the morning and after every hair wash, use the dosage tip to directly apply the product to the towel-dried scalp and massage in."
Can Alpecin Caffeine Liquid hair tonic also be used on dry hair or is it absolutely necessary to wash the hair before application?
Alpecin Caffeine Liquid can also be used on dry hair. It is important to apply caffeine liquid directly to the scalp with the dosage tip and massage it in. Since the liquid penetrates the scalp quickly, you can then style your hair as usual. Be sure to avoid contact with the eyes. Based on the alcohol and menthol content, the liquid may cause a brief tingle, which subsides quickly.
How long is Alpecin Caffeine Liquid effective, does it have to be used daily?
The caffeine complex quickly penetrates the hair roots where it forms a depot sufficient for up to 24 hours. To consistently provide the hair roots with sufficient growth energy and to protect them against the negative impacts of testosterone, daily application is vital. This has been confirmed in studies.
I have been using Alpecin Caffeine Liquid every day for a few weeks now and I am noticing increased hair loss.
In rare cases, stronger hair loss can occur temporarily. This process is called “shedding”.
Hair loss due to head massage?
Following an intensive head massage, hairs that are in their resting phase anyway can be massaged out of the follicles at an increased rate. However, after a brief period of time, this increased hair loss is reduced and the hair growth cycles can regenerate.
Double-Effect Caffeine Shampoo
Will I need to use the Double-Effect Caffeine Shampoo in the long term?
Basically yes. Due to the product's dual action, i.e. the simultaneous effect against dandruff and hair loss, the shampoo prevents premature hair loss and removes annoying dandruff. Both are long-term causes which means that the hereditary predisposition as well as the risk of skin irritation and dandruff due to microorganisms and sebum will remain for life.
What is the benefit of a head massage with the Double-Effect Caffeine Shampoo?
With a head massage using the Alpecin Double-Effect Caffeine Shampoo the active ingredients are better absorbed by the scalp and the hair root, thereby forming active ingredient reserves (depot). Moreover, the gentle pressure helps in better loosening the top layer of dandruff.
In which cases should I use Alpecin Tuning Shampoo?
Alpecin Tuning Shampoo is suited for dark blond to black hair. The intensive pigments in this shampoo keep the hair dark and simultaneously prevent hereditary hair loss with the caffeine complex. The dark shade is retained thanks to the intensive pigments contained in the shampoo. The hair can be left looking darker and fuller. If you start early enough, the first grey hairs will not become visible until later. This colour effect is inconspicuous and only becomes more intensive with regular use. It gradually washes out when normal shampoo is used. Daily use, leaving it in for 2 to 5 minutes, is recommended. The colour effect increases every time the hair is washed.
Is the Tuning Shampoo suitable for daily use?
For dark blond to black hair, the shampoo can be used daily. With each application, the colour pigments are deposited and reinforce your natural shade. This colour effect is inconspicuous and only becomes more intensive with regular use. It gradually washes out when normal shampoo is used. In addition, the hair roots are immediately provided with the activating caffeine, which can be detected when left in for just 120 seconds.
When can I expect to see visible results with the Tuning Shampoo and how long do I have to use it for?
That depends on the condition of your hair and the amount of grey hairs. Leave the shampoo on your scalp for 2–5 minutes - from application through to rinsing out. The longer you leave it in, the stronger the colour effect and the more caffeine absorbed. The colour effect only becomes apparent with regular application and washes out gradually with normal shampoo.
The hair effect
At the same time, the caffeine complex prevents hereditary hair loss. Washing the hair daily with the Tuning Shampoo supplies the hair roots with activating Alpecin caffeine. It can be detected after an exposure time of just 120 seconds.
What happens if I use the Tuning Shampoo on light blond, completely grey or white hair?
The tuning of grey hair is very gentle, meaning that if your hair is predominantly grey or white, the results may not meet your expectations. For predominantly white hair, we recommend a classic, permanent colouration.
If this is not desired, we recommend the Alpecin PowerGrey Shampoo for well-groomed, attractive grey hair without any yellow hue.
Can my scalp be discoloured when washing my hair with the Tuning Shampoo?
No, absolutely not, because the tuning is very gentle. The Tuning Shampoo from Alpecin is not a colouration or permanent hair dye and, as such, can be used without any fear of discolouration. Neither the scalp nor hands are discoloured when it is used.
Can my clothes or hats be discoloured when using Alpecin Tuning Shampoo, e.g. in the rain or by sweating?
To avoid discolouration of surfaces or textiles, you need to thoroughly rinse off any shampoo residues.
When should I use Alpecin Tuning Creme?
Alpecin Tuning Creme is for men who want to darken their first grey hairs immediately and who are also not looking for a permanent colour effect, since the tuning effect only lasts until the next time they wash their hair. To see a colour effect, the Tuning Creme should therefore be used each time you wash your hair.
How is Alpecin Tuning Creme used?
Is Alpecin Tuning Creme suitable for blonde and completely white hair?
The black pigments darken first grey hairs. Dark hair therefore appears darker and fuller.
If your hair is predominantly white or if it is blonde, your grey hair will not be covered intensively and evenly enough, meaning that the results may not meet your expectations.
For predominantly white hair, we recommend a classic, permanent colouration or tint.
Is Alpecin Tuning Creme equivalent to a hair dye or tint?
A hair dye (colouration) is a chemical process and results in a permanent colour.
The formula of Alpecin Tuning Creme has been developed in such a way that you can see an immediate colour effect (without any chemical processes!), which looks natural and can be washed out again.
To give your hair a long-lasting colour boost, we recommend Alpecin Tuning Shampoo.
Can Alpecin Tuning Creme prevent hereditary hair loss?
To prevent hereditary hair loss, the hair roots have to be treated with Alpecin Caffeine every day for 2 minutes. This is applied directly to the hair roots, e.g., using Alpecin Tuning Shampoo or Alpecin Caffeine Liquid.
Alpecin Tuning Creme is applied to the top parts of the hair. Alpecin Caffeine would not reach the scalp and could therefore not release its effect.
Can the use of Alpecin Tuning Creme result in discolouration? From rain or sweat for example?
Any product residue on your hands/fingers can easily be washed off with water. To avoid discolouration on surfaces and textiles, carefully rinse off any product residue.
What is special about the PowerGrey Shampoo for grey or white hair?
Alpecin PowerGrey Shampoo gives grey and white hair a fresh grey shade and also prevents hereditary hair loss. It is only suitable for grey and white hair.
Shampoo to prevent any hint of yellow
The intensive purple pigments neutralise the yellow hue each time the hair is washed. The result: a great-looking grey. Medium-grey hair looks even darker and fuller. In addition, the Alpecin PowerGrey Shampoo contains a powerful caffeine complex. It activates fatigued hair roots, strengthens hair growth and prevents hereditary hair loss.
Is the PowerGrey Shampoo suitable for daily use?
The Alpecin PowerGrey Shampoo can be used daily to wash grey hair. It gives hair a well-groomed, fresh grey shade. If possible, the caffeine complex should be used daily to provide the hair roots with sufficient amounts of energy. The caffeine complex can be detected after an exposure time of just 120 seconds.
Wash white hair with PowerGrey Shampoo
With white hair it is recommended to use the PowerGrey Shampoo every fourth hair wash. With daily use, the purple pigments could penetrate the white hair too intensively and lend it a purple hue. In the interim use Alpecin Caffeine Shampoo C1 which counteracts hereditary hair loss in a targeted manner.
Can my hair acquire a purple hue? If so, what can I do about it?
If you have white hair and use the Alpecin PowerGrey Shampoo on a daily basis, the purple pigments may penetrate the white hair too intensively and give it a purple hue. In this case only use the PowerGrey Shampoo for every fourth hair wash. In the interim use Alpecin Caffeine Shampoo C1 which counteracts hereditary hair loss in a targeted manner.
Dandruff Killer Shampoo
What is special about Alpecin Dandruff Killer Shampoo?
The formula to prevent dandruff developed by Dr. Wolff Research combines 4 active ingredients in one shampoo. Zinc pyrithione and piroctone olamine are effective against fungi, yeast and bacteria. They prevent new dandruff from forming and restore the scalp's natural balance. Salicylic acid and fumaric acid help remove existing dandruff. The scalp is smoothed, which sustainably reduces the colonisation of microorganisms in the long term. It has been scientifically proven that dandruff is significantly reduced after just 2 weeks. Click here for more information on the study.
Where is the line between "harmless dandruff" and pathological psoriasis?
The transitions are fluid. Cosmetic dandruff normally occurs over the entire surface of the scalp.
Dandruff flakes are somewhat larger with oily scalps and smaller with drier scalps.
One of the signs of pathological psoriasis is when the skin is scaly over a very small area. The marginal areas of hair growth close to the ears and neck are frequently affected. Pronounced scaly, flaky skin can also often be found on other parts of the body (e.g. elbows / legs). A trip to the doctor can often be helpful as psoriasis is not a cosmetic problem.
What causes dandruff and dandruff attacks?
Dandruff attacks result when the scalp is particularly sensitive. For example, the dry room air which is caused by indoor heating can lead to dandruff.
Do I suffer from psoriasis?
If you suffer from pronounced dandruff for an extended period, this can be seen as a sign of a skin disease, e.g. psoriasis. A trip to the doctor may prove helpful.
What are the consequences of fungi, bacteria and yeast if left untreated?
Microorganisms feed on sebum from the scalp and may excrete substances that irritate the scalp. Permanent irritation does not just create discomfort such as scalp itch, but the scalp will react with increased dandruff. With chronic irritation, it may even become inflamed and become hypersensitive.
The 4-fold active ingredient complex
The Alpecin Dandruff Killer Shampoo contains a 4-fold active ingredient complex specially designed to tackle such problems. Zinc pyrithione and piroctone olamine are effective against fungi, yeast and bacteria. This prevents new dandruff and restores the scalp’s natural balance. Salicylic acid and fumaric acid help remove existing dandruff. This creates a smooth scalp surface, thereby reducing the colonisation of microorganisms in the long term.
In addition, the Alpecin Dandruff Killer Shampoo contains panthenol, allantoin and a sophisticated galenic formula. This combination prevents irritation and stabilises the scalp’s resistance.
Can I use the Dandruff Killer Shampoo to simultaneously prevent hair loss?
No, the Dandruff Killer Shampoo only contains a 4-fold active ingredient complex to combat dandruff. This works to relieve scalp irritation, remove dandruff and prevent new dandruff.
What helps against dandruff and hair loss?
In order to consistently supply the hair roots with sufficient growth energy and to protect them from the negative effects of testosterone, additional use of the caffeine-containing Alpecin Liquid is recommended. As an alternative you could use the Alpecin Double-Effect Caffeine Shampoo to treat dandruff and hereditary hair loss.
What is the difference between the Dandruff Killer Shampoo and the Double-Effect Caffeine Shampoo?
The Dandruff Killer Shampoo contains a new formula which combines 4 active ingredients in one shampoo for effective dandruff removal, scalp itch relief and prevention of new dandruff. Do you suffer from hereditary hair loss and would like to boost the productivity of your hair roots significantly? If so we additionally recommend the use of Alpecin Caffeine Liquid each time you wash your hair. The caffeine-containing active ingredient combination keeps hair roots awake and contributes to extending their growth phases for longer than provided for by hereditary predisposition.
What does the Double-Effect Caffeine Shampoo do?
The Alpecin Double-Effect Caffeine Shampoo is simultaneously effective against dandruff and hereditary hair loss. The combination of the two active anti-dandruff substances, salicylic acid and piroctone olamine, loosens scaly, keratinous cells and thoroughly removes dandruff from the scalp. The caffeine complex activates the hair roots, extends the growth phases and improves hair growth.
Is the Dandruff Killer Shampoo suitable for daily use?
The frequency with which the Dandruff Killer Shampoo from Alpecin should be used depends on the severity of your dandruff. The Dandruff Killer Shampoo can be used on a daily basis. Panthenol, allantoin and a sophisticated galenic formula prevent irritation and stabilise the scalp’s resistance.
I have already tested many dandruff shampoos but couldn't satisfactorily solve my dandruff problem so far. What do you recommend?
Alpecin Scalp Sun Protection
Why does sunburn occur?
Sunlight exposes the earth to UV radiation, the intensity of which depends on the position of the sun, the thickness of the ozone layer, altitude and weather conditions.
Depending on the wavelengths of the UV rays, a distinction can be made between UVA (long-wave) and UVB (short-wave) rays, which can penetrate the skin to different depths.
The skin has its own natural protective system to defend itself against these. The intrinsic protection time, however, is limited and depends on your skin type, any pre-tan and the intensity of the sun (UV index).
In the event of excessive sun exposure, your natural protection is no longer enough and there is a risk of sunburn. The energy of the UV light damages skin cells, causing the skin to become irritated and inflamed, resulting in redness or even blisters.
Why do we have to protect our skin from the sun?
The skin's natural protection is limited and varies from individual to individual. If the skin's intrinsic protection is no longer satisfactory, the sun's rays damage the skin cells, causing sunburn. Sunburn appears as redness of the skin, itchiness, flushing and swelling or blisters.
Even though the skin usually regenerates itself within a few days following sunburn, long-term damage has been caused. Every time you have sunburn, this increases the risk of skin cancer and results in irreversible skin damage (e.g. accelerated skin ageing). You can protect yourself from this by using sunscreen.
What do the terms UVA, UVB and SPF mean?
Sunlight is made up of a continuous radiation spectrum that is divided into various types of radiation depending on the wavelength, e.g. into ultraviolet radiation (UV), visible light or infrared radiation (IR). UV radiation is also divided into short-wave UVB radiation and longer-wave UVA radiation.
UVB radiation only penetrates the uppermost layers of the skin, but it is very high in energy and results in skin damage in the event of overexposure. UVB rays are therefore primarily responsible for sunburn.
UVA radiation has lower energy levels than UVB radiation. However, it can penetrate deeper into the skin, damaging cells and causing tissue damage. Very high exposure to UVA radiation, however, can also lead to sunburn and an increased risk of skin cancer.
"SPF" is the abbreviation for "sun protection factor". The number specifies how much longer you can stay out in the sun until sunburn occurs after using sunscreen. The natural protection time depends on the respective skin type, any pre-tan and the intensity of the sun (UV index).
Which parts of the skin are most often forgotten when applying sun protection?
When applying sun protection, no parts of the body exposed to the sun should generally be forgotten. However, people often forget particularly light-sensitive areas such as the scalp, ears or the bridge of the feet.
Alpecin Scalp Sun Protection has SPF 15. Is this enough?
Alpecin Scalp Sun Protection has been developed to be distributed easily and evenly onto the scalp thanks to its special liquid galenic formulation. It is quickly absorbed. This ensures that the sun protection (SPF 15) is sufficiently distributed onto the affected areas of the scalp for effective protection from the sun.
Whether SPF 15 offers sufficient protection depends on the individual skin type and the intensity of the sun.
Can I also apply Alpecin Scalp Sun Protection to wet scalps?
Alpecin Scalp Sun Protection can be applied both to dry and wet scalps. Dry your scalp briefly with a towel beforehand to enable optimum application. Thanks to its special formula, the liquid can be distributed easily and is quickly absorbed into the scalp.
Should I apply Alpecin Scalp Sun Protection before or after styling my hair with gel or spray?
We recommend applying Alpecin Scalp Sun Protection before styling your hair to be able to massage it thoroughly into your scalp. However, it can also be applied to styled hair. Apply directly from the bottle, guiding over the scalp before massaging in.
How often should I apply Alpecin Scalp Sun Protection every day?
The more intensive the sun's rays, the more frequent and generous the application to ensure appropriate sun protection.
If I apply Alpecin Scalp Sun Protection several times a day, does this not make the amount of caffeine too high?
The amount of caffeine absorbed via the hair roots and scalp equates to precisely the right dose and is absolutely safe, even for people who react sensitively to caffeine.
Is Alpecin Scalp Sun Protection suitable for all scalps?
Alpecin Scalp Sun Protection is suitable for all healthy scalps that are not irritated or damaged (not suitable for children).
Does Alpecin Scalp Sun Protection have a nourishing effect on the scalp?
The niacin contained in the caffeine complex improves the skin's barrier and boosts the scalp's ability to retain moisture.
Is the alcohol contained in Alpecin Scalp Sun Protection harmful?
Thanks to the alcohol, Alpecin Scalp Sun Protection is quickly absorbed and optimally transports the active ingredients to the hair roots. The alcohol does not have a negative effect on the scalp or the hair.
Does Alpecin Scalp Sun Protection leave discolourations on textiles?
The yellowish colour that occurs due to the light protection filter can result in discolouration on textiles.
